Have We Discovered Evidence For Life On Titan
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jun 08, 2010
Recent results from the Cassini mission suggest that hydrogen and acetylene are depleted at the surface of Titan. Both results are still preliminary and the hydrogen loss in particular is the result of a computer calculation, and not a direct measurement. However the findings are interesting for astrobiology. Heather Smith and I, in a paper published 5 years ago (McKay and Smith, 2005) suggested that methane-based (rather than water-based) life - ie, organisms called methanogens - on Titan could c ... read more

Backwards Black Holes Might Make Bigger Jets
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 02, 2010
Pasadena CA (JPL) Jun 02, 2010 Going against the grain may turn out to be a powerful move for black holes. New research suggests supermassive black holes that spin backwards might produce more ferocious jets of gas. The results have broad implications for how galaxies change over time. "A lot of what happens in an entire galaxy depends on what's going on in the miniscule central region wh ... more

Hinode Discovers The Origin Of White Light Flare
Tokyo, Japan (SPX) May 28, 2010
A joint Japan-United States research team has identified the origin of the white light emission in solar flares. The team, led by Dr. Kyoko Watanabe, an aerospace project research associate at the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, made its discovery by quantitatively analyzing an X-class solar flare, which was observed by two successive, solar-observing satellites: Hinode and the NASA SMEX mis ... more

Microsoft sticks up for Windows operating system
San Francisco (AFP) June 1, 2010
Microsoft on Tuesday publicly defended Windows in the face of unconfirmed reports that Google was shunning the operating system due to security concerns. Google declined to respond to an AFP inquiry, saying only: "As a rule, we don't comment on operational matters." Microsoft, however, felt that stories published in the Financial Times and elsewhere warranted a fast, firm rebuttal. U ... more

Europa's Churn Leads To Oxygen Burn
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jun 01, 2010
There may be enough oxygen in the waters of Jupiter's moon Europa to support millions of tons worth of fish, according to a new study. While no one is suggesting there are fish on Europa, this finding suggests the Jovian satellite could be capable of supporting the kinds of life familiar to us here on Earth. Europa, which is roughly the size of Earth's moon, is enveloped by a global ocean about 100 miles deep (160 km), with an icy crust that may be only a few miles thick. From what we know of Eart ... read more
