Small Near-Earth Object Probably A Rocket Part
Pasadena CA (JPL) May 31, 2010
Scientists at NASA's Near-Earth Object Program Office at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., have determined that a small object that safely passed Earth on May 21 is more than likely an upper-stage of a rocket that carried a spacecraft on an interplanetary trajectory. "The orbit of this object is very similar to that of the Earth, and one would not expect an object to remain in this type of orbit for very long," said Paul Chodas, a scientist at NASA's Near-Earth Object Program O ... read more

Get It While it's Hot! Star Devours Planet
Moffett Field CA (SPX) May 26, 2010
The hottest known planet in the Milky Way galaxy may also be its shortest-lived world. The doomed planet is being eaten by its parent star, according to observations made by a new instrument on NASA's Hubble Space Telescope, the Cosmic Origins Spectrograph (COS). The planet may only have another 10,000 years left before it is completely devoured. The planet, called WASP-12b, is so close to ... more

Triangulating Photosynthesis
Moffett Field CA (SPX) May 25, 2010
About 85 percent of the history of life on Earth has been solely microbial, meaning that single-celled organisms ruled the planet for billions of years before more complex life evolved. One way that geologists try to decipher how these cells functioned as far back as 3 billion years is by studying modern microbial mats, or gooey layers of nutrient-exchanging bacteria that grow mostly on moist su ... more

Spacecraft Reveals Small Solar Events Have Large Scale Effects
Washington DC (SPX) May 26, 2010
NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, or SDO, has allowed scientists for the first time to comprehensively view the dynamic nature of storms on the sun. Solar storms have been recognized as a cause of technological problems on Earth since the invention of the telegraph in the 19th century. The Atmospheric Imaging Assembly (AIA), one of three instruments aboard SDO, allowed scientists to disco ... more

Japanese team finds material that could make super disc
Tokyo (AFP) May 24, 2010
A Japanese research team has found a material that could be used to make a low-price super disc with data storage capacity thousands of times greater than a DVD, the lead scientist said Monday. The material transforms from a black-colour metal state that conducts electricity into a brown semiconductor when hit by light, according to Shin-ichi Ohkoshi, chemistry professor at the University of Tokyo. The material, a new crystal form of titanium oxide, can switch back and forth between the metal an ... read more
