Herschel telescope shows galactic star formation is slowing
Noordwijk, Netherlands (AFP) May 6, 2010
The formation of new stars in galaxies like the Milky Way has declined five-fold in the last three billion years, initial findings of the European Space Agency's Herschel telescope showed Thursday. While scientists already knew that star formation was more prolific billions of years ago, the Herschel telescope has for the first time been able to start measuring the rate of decline, scientist Steve Eales said at the launch. Three billion years ago "galaxies were forming stars at ... five times t ... read more

Scientists Finds Evidence Of Water Ice On Asteroid's Surface
Knoxville TN (SPX) Apr 29, 2010
Asteroids may not be the dark, dry, lifeless chunks of rock scientists have long thought. Josh Emery, research assistant professor with the earth and planetary sciences department at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville, has found evidence of water ice and organic material on the asteroid 24 Themis. This evidence supports the idea that asteroids could be responsible for bringing water an ... more

Asteroid Ice May Be Living Fossil With Clues To Oceans' Origins
Tallahassee FL (SPX) Apr 29, 2010
The first-ever discovery of ice and organic molecules on an asteroid may hold clues to the origins of Earth's oceans and life 4 billion years ago. University of Central Florida researchers detected a thin layer of water ice and organic molecules on the surface of 24 Themis, the largest in a family of asteroids orbiting between Mars and Jupiter. Their unexpected findings will be publi ... more

Ice asteroids likely source of Earth's water: study
Paris (AFP) April 28, 2010
Astronomers have for the first time detected ice and organic compounds on an asteroid, a pair of landmark studies released on Wednesday says. The discovery bolsters the theory that comets and asteroids crashing into Earth nearly four billion years ago seeded the planet with water and carbon-based molecules, both essential ingredients for life. Working separately, two teams of scientists ... more

Planck Highlights The Complexity Of Star Formation
Paris, France (ESA) Apr 27, 2010
New images from ESA's Planck space observatory reveal the forces driving star formation and give astronomers a way to understand the complex physics that shape the dust and gas in our Galaxy. Star formation takes place hidden behind veils of dust but that doesn't mean we can't see through them. Where optical telescopes see only black space, Planck's microwave eyes reveal myriad glowing structures of dust and gas. Now, Planck has used this ability to probe two relatively nearby star-forming regions ... read more
