Arizonans Find Largest Meteorite Fragment From Spectacular Midwestern Fall
Tucson AZ (SPX) May 06, 2010
UA meteorite curator Marvin Killgore has a 300-gram piece of the object that exploded over Wisconsin in April. People in southwestern Wisconsin and northern Iowa on April 14 witnessed a sonic boom and a fireball that briefly - and spectacularly - lit up the late evening sky. It was the result of an ancient rock that ended its 4.5 billion year journey through the solar system in a ball of flames entering Earth's atmosphere. NASA officials estimated that the rock, a meteoroid some 3.3 feet acr ... read more

Ice asteroids likely source of Earth's water: study
Paris (AFP) April 28, 2010
Astronomers have for the first time detected ice and organic compounds on an asteroid, a pair of landmark studies released on Wednesday says. The discovery bolsters the theory that comets and asteroids crashing into Earth nearly four billion years ago seeded the planet with water and carbon-based molecules, both essential ingredients for life. Working separately, two teams of scientists ... more

SDO Observes Massive Eruption And Scorching Rain
Huntsville AL (SPX) Apr 28, 2010
Just last week, scientists working with NASA's new Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) released the most astonishing movies of the sun anyone had ever seen. Now, they're doing it again. "SDO has just observed a massive eruption on the sun-one of the biggest in years," says Lika Guhathakurta of NASA headquarters in Washington DC. "The footage is not only dramatic, but also could solve a longst ... more

LRO Team Helps Track Laser Signals To Russian Rover Mirror
Greenbelt MD (SPX) Apr 27, 2010
Using information provided by NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO) instrument teams, researchers at the University of California San Diego have successfully pinpointed the location of a long lost light reflector left on the lunar surface by bouncing laser signals from Earth to the Russian Lunokhod 1 retroreflector. The initial imaging of the two Russian rovers, Lunokhod 1 and 2 were m ... more

Brain-Like Computing On An Organic Molecular Layer
Houghton MI (SPX) Apr 28, 2010
Information processing circuits in digital computers are static. In our brains, information processing circuits-neurons-evolve continuously to solve complex problems. Now, an international research team from Japan and Michigan Technological University has created a similar process of circuit evolution in an organic molecular layer that can solve complex problems. This is the first time a brain-like "evolutionary circuit" has been realized. This computer is massively parallel: The world's fastest s ... read more
