Follow Rosetta's Final Earth Boost
Paris, France (ESA) Nov 05, 2009
ESA's comet chaser Rosetta will swing by Earth for the last time on 13 November to pick up energy and begin the final leg of its 10-year journey to comet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko. ESA's European Space Operations Centre will host a media briefing on that day. This will be the third Earth swingby, the last of Rosetta's four planetary gravity assists. Closest approach to Earth is expected at ... read more

Hidden Territory On Mercury Revealed
Huntsville AL (SPX) Nov 04, 2009
The MESSENGER spacecraft's third flyby of the planet Mercury has given scientists, for the first time, an almost complete view of the planet's surface and revealed some dramatic changes in Mercury's comet-like tail. "The new images remind us that Mercury continues to hold surprises," says Sean Solomon, principal investigator for the mission and director of the Department of Terrestrial ... more

Black Holes Produce The Most Energetic Cosmic Radiation
Washington DC (SPX) Nov 05, 2009
Blasts of radiation brighter than a trillion suns. Charged particles with the energy of a well-thrown baseball. Jets of magnetized plasma streaming across intergalactic space. What do these have in common? Their energy is derived from black holes. Today, at the 2009 Fermi Symposium in Washington, DC, Charles Dermer, an astrophysicist in the Space Science Division of the Naval Research ... more

Solar Winds Triggered By Magnetic Fields
London, UK (SPX) Nov 04, 2009
Solar wind generated by the sun is probably driven by a process involving powerful magnetic fields, according to a new study led by UCL researchers based on the latest observations from the Hinode satellite. Scientists have long speculated on the source of solar winds. The Extreme Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (EIS), on board the Japanese-UK-US Hinode satellite, is now generating ... more

Carbon Atmosphere Discovered On Neutron Star
Boston MA (SPX) Nov 05, 2009
Evidence for a thin veil of carbon has been found on the neutron star in the Cassiopeia A supernova remnant. This discovery, made with NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory, resolves a ten-year mystery surrounding this object. "The compact star at the center of this famous supernova remnant has been an enigma since its discovery," said Wynn Ho of the University of Southampton and lead author of ... more

Precise Picture Of Early Universe Supports 'Dark Matter' Theory
Cardiff, UK (SPX) Nov 03, 2009
A detailed picture of the seeds of structures in the universe has been unveiled by an international team co-led by a Cardiff University scientist. The team has obtained extremely precise data about the early universe, using a telescope near the South Pole in the Antarctic. Their measurements of the cosmic microwave background - a faintly glowing relic of the hot, dense, young universe ... more

Fermi Detects Gamma-Ray From "Star Factories" In Other Galaxies
Menlo Park CA (SPX) Nov 03, 2009
Nearby galaxies undergoing a furious pace of star formation also emit lots of gamma rays, say astronomers using NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope. Two so-called "starburst" galaxies, plus a satellite of our own Milky Way galaxy, represent a new category of gamma-ray-emitting objects detected both by Fermi and ground-based observatories. "Starburst galaxies have not been accessible in ... more

'Ultra-Primitive' Particles Found In Comet Dust
Washington DC (SPX) Nov 03, 2009
Dust samples collected by high-flying aircraft in the upper atmosphere have yielded an unexpectedly rich trove of relicts from the ancient cosmos, report scientists from the Carnegie Institution. The stratospheric dust includes minute grains that likely formed inside stars that lived and died long before the birth of our Sun, as well as material from molecular clouds in interstellar space. ... more
