Giant Ribbon Discovered At Edge Of Solar System
Huntsville AL (SPX) Oct 20, 2009
For years, researchers have known that the solar system is surrounded by a vast bubble of magnetism. Called the "heliosphere," it springs from the sun and extends far beyond the orbit of Pluto, providing a first line of defense against cosmic rays and interstellar clouds that try to enter our local space. Although the heliosphere is huge and literally fills the sky, it emits no light and ... more

    The 2009 Orionid Meteor Shower
Huntsville AL (SPX) Oct 20, 2009
The Orionid meteor shower peaks this week and it could be a very good show. "Earth is passing through a stream of debris from Halley's Comet, the source of the Orionids," says Bill Cooke of NASA's Meteoroid Environment Office. "Flakes of comet dust hitting the atmosphere should give us dozens of meteors per hour." The best time to look is before sunrise on Wednesday, Oct. 21st. That's when ... more

Teams Win At NASA National Lunar Robotics Competition
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Oct 20, 2009
Nineteen teams pushed their robot competitors to the limit, and three teams claimed a total of $750,000 in NASA prizes at this year's Regolith Excavation Challenge on Oct. 18. This is the first time in the competition's three-year history that any team qualified for a cash prize, the largest NASA has awarded to date. After two days of intense competition hosted at NASA's Ames Research ... more

Meteorite From September 25 Fireball Event Recovered And Presented
Grimsby, Canada (SPX) Oct 20, 2009
When Tony Garchinski heard a loud crash just after 9 p.m. on Friday, September 25 he didn't think much of it. That is, until he awoke the next morning to find the windshield of his mom's Nissan Pathfinder with a huge crack in it. Making note of the 'unusual' rocks he later found on the car's hood, Garchinski chalked the incident up to vandalism and filed a police report. It wasn't until ... more

    Meteorite smashes windshield
Grimsby, Ontario (UPI) Oct 17, 2009
An Ontario man thought vandals had smashed his mother's car windshield with rocks but it turned out the rocks came from a meteorite, officials in Canada said. The meteorite's fireball lit up the sky over Ontario Sept. 25 with a light 100 times brighter than the moon. Researchers at the University of Western Ontario tracked the remains of the fireball to Grimsby, Ontario, where ... more

Experts Detail Need For Sustainable Outer Space Environment
Daejeon, South Korea (SPX) Oct 19, 2009
How best to cope with the rising tide of orbital space debris? What international rules of behavior are required for safe operations in space? Can there be a sustainable space environment for world-wide space activities? These and other issues are to be addressed in a special panel discussion on "Achieving a Sustainable Space Environment for Future Space Activities." ... more

The Milky Way's Tiny But Tough Galactic Neighbour
Paris, France (SPX) Oct 16, 2009
ESO has announced the release of a stunning new image of one of our nearest galactic neighbours, Barnard's Galaxy, also known as NGC 6822. The galaxy contains regions of rich star formation and curious nebulae, such as the bubble clearly visible in the upper left of this remarkable vista. Astronomers classify NGC 6822 as an irregular dwarf galaxy because of its odd shape and relatively ... more
