Our Smashing Solar System
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Aug 03, 2009
Like messages in a bottle, grains inside meteorites carry clues to the history of our solar system. Some of these tiny crystals are older than the solar system itself. A new study has determined the age of a set of grains from one meteorite. The results seem to indicate a galactic disturbance may have triggered the formation of our solar system. Where do we come from? The answer varies dep ... read more

Pluto likely to remain a pariah
Rio De Janeiro (UPI) Aug 2, 2009
Pluto's lowered celestial status will probably stick at an upcoming meeting of astronomers in Rio de Janeiro, an American astronomer predicted Sunday. Pluto was reduced from a full-fledged planet -- the ninth in the Earth's solar system -- to dwarf planet at a meeting of the International Astronomical Union three years ago in Prague, Czech Republic. The Houston Chronicle reporte ... more

    Field Testing For The Moon
Washington DC (SPX) Aug 03, 2009
When President Kennedy announced on Sept. 12, 1962, that the United States would go to the moon before the end of the decade, life and work at NASA changed in monumental ways. By then, NASA had four manned spaceflights under its belt. A trip to the moon would leverage years of spaceflight knowledge, but traveling out of low Earth orbit, past Geosynchronous orbit to the moon, would demand increas ... more

Cosmic Dance Helps Galaxies Lose Weight
Boston MA (SPX) Jul 31, 2009
A study published this week in the journal Nature offers an explanation for the origin of dwarf spheroidal galaxies. The research may settle an outstanding puzzle in understanding galaxy formation. Dwarf spheroidal galaxies are small and very faint, containing few stars relative to their total mass. They appear to be made mostly of dark matter - a mysterious substance detectable only by it ... more

Study Puts New Spin On Rotation Speed Of Saturn
Louisville KY (SPX) Jul 31, 2009
Saturn is rotating five minutes faster than previously thought, a fact that sheds new light on the planet's composition. Wave patterns in Saturn's clouds show that scientists have been using the wrong rotation rate for the planet, says Timothy Dowling, a planetary atmospheres researcher at the University of Louisville in Louisville, Ky., who helped make the discovery. An article on the ... more

Living In A Dying Solar System Part One
Moffett Field CA (SPX) Jul 28, 2009
There is a lot of hysteria on the Internet these days that the ancient Mayan calendar, which ends in 2012, portends the end of the world through a variety of possible astronomical events: rogue comets, supernovae, or even supposed "energy" from the galactic center. The reality is that the Mayans simply tracked astronomical cycles. They were not psychic. This preoccupation with doomsday has ... more

Astronomy Question Of The Week: Whither Goest Thou, Milky Way
Bonn, Germany (SPX) Jul 28, 2009
As the young god Heracles forcefully suckled the breast of the Greek goddess Hera, she pushed him away and a spurt of her breast milk spilled across the sky. The name of our home galaxy, which does in fact appear in the night sky as a milky band, originates from this Greek legend. The term 'galaxy' stems from the ancient Greek word for milk, 'gala'. After the well-known Andromeda Nebula ... more

Astronomers Discover Rare 'Green Pea' Galaxies
New Haven CT (SPX) Jul 28, 2009
A team of astronomers has discovered a group of rare galaxies called the "Green Peas" with the help of citizen scientists working through an online project called Galaxy Zoo. The finding could lend unique insights into how galaxies form stars in the early universe. The Galaxy Zoo users, who volunteer their spare time to help classify galaxies in an online image bank, came across a number ... more
